Every year, museum professionals, boards and volunteers receive a snapshot of the field through surveys and research. Too often, these reports are downloaded, skimmed, and forgotten.
That is a missed opportunity.
The American Alliance of Museums‘ 2025 National Snapshot of United States Museums is more than a collection of statistics—it is a strategic roadmap for museum leaders. The report illustrates where the field is recovering, where challenges remain, and where museum leaders should focus their attention over the next several years.
This report backs up what many of us in the museum profession already know.
Recovery Is Uneven
While many museums have rebounded since the pandemic, recovery has not been universal.
More than half of responding museums report attendance below 2019 levels, and nearly one-third attribute declines to economic uncertainty and changing travel patterns.
The lesson is clear: museums can no longer rely solely on historical attendance patterns. They must actively compete for visitors.
Financial Stability Cannot Be Assumed
The report reveals that only about half of museums report stronger financial performance than before the pandemic, while many continue facing budget pressures and grant uncertainty.
Diversified revenue streams—including memberships, rentals, earned income, philanthropy, sponsorships, and grants—are no longer optional. They are essential.
Museums Remain Community Anchors
Despite financial challenges, museums continue expanding their public service roles by providing educational support, workforce development, digital literacy, language access, and civic engagement opportunities.
Today’s museums are expected to contribute far beyond collections and exhibitions.
Advocacy Has Become Essential
Federal funding uncertainty demonstrates why advocacy can no longer be left solely to professional associations.
Every museum board member, executive director, volunteer, and supporter has a role in communicating the museum’s value to policymakers and community leaders.
The Takeaway
The museums that succeed and thrive over the next decade will be those that embrace change rather than simply endure it.
National data provides leaders with the opportunity to make informed decisions before challenges become crises.
