Membership programs remain one of the most reliable sources of unrestricted revenue for museums.
Yet many organizations still treat memberships as annual fundraising campaigns rather than relationship-building programs.
The AAM 2025 National Snapshot reports that four out of five museums operate membership programs, with many seeing stable or increasing participation.
Sell Belonging
People rarely purchase memberships just because admission is discounted.
They join because they want to belong. The typical members benefits including admission discounts, advanced notice of events, and early event ticket opportunities should be the bare minimum in membership perks. Experience matters, but during times where every dollar counts in family budgets, belonging becomes more important.
Effective membership programs communicate:
- Shared values
- Community
- Preservation
- Education
- Civic pride
Members invest in mission.
Deliver Exclusive Experiences
Benefits should extend beyond free admission.
Consider:
- Curator talks
- Behind-the-scenes tours
- Exhibition previews
- Members-only travel
- Special lectures
- Digital content
Exclusive access creates loyalty.
Build Relationships All Year
Membership renewal begins immediately after someone joins.
Regular communication, recognition, and personalized engagement increase retention far more effectively than renewal notices alone.
Measure Retention
New memberships matter.
Retention matters more.
Healthy membership programs continually evaluate:
- Renewal rates
- Lifetime value
- Referral activity
- Event participation
- Donor conversion
Membership should be viewed as the beginning of a relationship rather than a transaction.
